4-year-old child dies after being struck by vehicle in Markham

TORONTO —; A four-year-old child has died after being struck by a vehicle in Markham, while a second child was injured Thursday afternoon.

York Regional Police Const. Andy Pattenden said the two children were pedestrians and were struck by the vehicle at Fieldside Street and Riverwalk Drive, near the David Suzuki Public School, just before 2 p.m.

One of the children was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. The second child sustained minor injuries.

“We are extremely saddened to hear of the tragic loss of one of our students. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family,” the York Region District School Board said in an emailed statement to Global News.

“At this time, the primary focus will be to support students, families and staff members of the school.”

“The Board’s Traumatic Events Response Team, which includes psychologists, social workers and other support staff, was dispatched to the school this afternoon and will be on hand tomorrow as well.”

Pattenden said the area would be closed for several hours police investigated.

Police are expected to provide an update Friday morning.
