A man in Australia is outraged after hidden cameras captured a police officer using pepper spray on his dogs on Monday.

However, Narromine police in New South Wales, Australia now say the constable acted within the scope of his duties and would not face any disciplinary action.

Michael Vizintin and his partner, Sharisse Carney say they weren’t home when the incident took place, but that a friend was staying at their Narromine home.

The constable can be seen in the footage approaching the front door. A short time later the couple’s four dogs approach to investigate the commotion on the front porch.

“And [our friend] was actually at the front door speaking to the police officer, and he had the [pepper] spray in his hand. And he walked into our yard with [the capsicum spray] already out, and he’s seen the dogs and decided to spray them,” Carney told Ninemsn in Australia.

Carney said that after viewing the footage they went to the Narromine police station to confront the officer in question, but claimed their complaints were not taken seriously.

“When we asked him about it he turned around and said no I never did that, and when we told him we had the footage he laughed about it and sort of made a joke about it,” Carney said.

Frustrated with the officer’s actions, the couple uploaded the video to Facebook, where it soon went viral and prompted a local controversy.

“These people are supposed to serve and protect us, and then turn around and spray our dogs which you can clearly see there are friendly and went to go and lick this officer just makes you think that what else are they out there doing,” the couple wrote in their Facebook post.

A spokesperson for NSW police told local media that the department has reviewed the footage and determined the officer did nothing wrong.

“The matter’s been reviewed by the senior officer here. It seems the incident was conducted in line with policy and procedure, so we’re not taking any action in relation to it,” Inspector Mark Dixon told Ninemsn. “We’re aware of it being posted, but unfortunately that’s the way it is.”
